Evaluation 7
Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full production?
Our pre-production consisted of planning through a story board which helped us know which shots would be in what order. During the production of our preliminary task, our filming consisted of a lot of different angle shots as well as shot/reverse shot meaning that we can see that a conversation is being held between people from one of the party’s points of view. Usually a shot/reverse shot would be shot from behind and persons shoulder. I think that the preliminary test helped as an introduction to what we did in our final piece (Dirty Riches opening sequence) such as the planning, the filming and the editing.
During the post-production process, I understood how a conversation from both parties is shown in films and TV shows which is through an editing technique called match on action. This technique is when one shot is cut to another shot portraying the action of the first shot. The match on action technique was helpful for the final piece throughout the opening sequence especially when filming in one particular location. Considering that in our preliminary test, the main focus was a conversation between two people and the two were sitting down, in order to give an impression that one of the two characters was of a higher status/level of dominance, we had used high and low angle shots. Another technique I learnt about was the 180 degree rule, which gives the audience a better view of the location and idea of the relationship between both characters.

Post-Production: evaluation of decision making
The biggest change we made was the title of our film. Although during the pitch we decided we are going to name our film "In the Red" we changed our decision. We decided to name our film "Dirty Riches" instead. This title went better with the chosen track ("Money" by Pink Floyd) and also had a more logical connection with our storyline. "Dirty" suggests wrongdoings and crime, which is used to obtain the "Riches".

Software

During the coursework, i was introduced to Final Cut Pro. Initially, it was very difficult to get used to all the functions and it did take me some time to get used to it. I was very comfortable using Microsoft Office as I have enough practise of it. Making posts with word documents and powerpoints becomes tedious and is not visually engaging. The new online tools I learnt to use enhanced my skills and made by blog much more intriguing too. In my opinion, the only disadvantage of posting powerpoints using slideshare is that the animations and transitions we add cannot be seen on the blog.

Online Tools
We used many online tools including Prezi, Glogster, Slideshare and Go Animate to make our blog visually engaging. I have never used these tools in the past so it was a new experience overall to learn how to use them. Prezi was a particular favourite as the presentations are interactive and enjoyable to view. Glogster was also effective as the posters are a different way to present our work. I spent a long time with each online tool as I was learning how to use each one. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with the outcome as my posts look very appealing.

Using a Blog

I had never used a blog in the past. We had been given a guide on each function of a blog and how to make and edit posts. Initially I had to keep refering to it but after a few posts I was comfortable with it. One of the most important things we were told to do was to give each post a cloud label. Something that I found difficult was embedding presentations from Glogster, Slideshare or Prezi. However, now I can easily work on a blog and can start my own one too.

Final Cut Pro
We learnt the basic editing functions of Final Cut Pro, such as: J-Reverse Play, K-Pause Play, L-Forward Play, I-Mark In Point, O-Mark Out Point. As this was the first time I used Final Cut Pro, it took me some time to get used to the functions. Firstly we had to choose the shots we were actually going to use for our opening. We had to drag and drop them to the red section of the screen to include them in our opening. The most difficult part was editing each shot according to the beat of our soundtrack. We had to keep adjusting the sound bar at the bottom of the screen. For example when the protagonist enters the screen with a side shot, the sound became more dramatic, emphasizing the importance of the character. This technique was difficult and more time consuming as the music had to be adjusted all the time. However, it worked extremely well at the end and made the whole opening more effective and successful.
When we had to add the titles, it took us some time to decide which colour would contrast with the background and would make the title easily visible. The job roles had to be clearly visible and it took us some time to decide on this.
Final Cut Pro is difficult to use at first but it is a very effective tool to make the editing seamless. Once we had had enough practise with our preliminary, using it became slightly easier.
