Evaluation 7
Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full production?
Our pre-production consisted of planning through a story board which helped us know which shots would be in what order. During the production of our preliminary task, our filming consisted of a lot of different angle shots as well as shot/reverse shot meaning that we can see that a conversation is being held between people from one of the party’s points of view. Usually a shot/reverse shot would be shot from behind and persons shoulder. I think that the preliminary test helped as an introduction to what we did in our final piece (Dirty Riches opening sequence) such as the planning, the filming and the editing.
During the post-production process, I understood how a conversation from both parties is shown in films and TV shows which is through an editing technique called match on action. This technique is when one shot is cut to another shot portraying the action of the first shot. The match on action technique was helpful for the final piece throughout the opening sequence especially when filming in one particular location. Considering that in our preliminary test, the main focus was a conversation between two people and the two were sitting down, in order to give an impression that one of the two characters was of a higher status/level of dominance, we had used high and low angle shots. Another technique I learnt about was the 180 degree rule, which gives the audience a better view of the location and idea of the relationship between both characters.
